Meet Our Speakers

The 2024 Nurse Practice Transitions Conference highlights diverse research, strategies, and insights from nursing leaders across Oregon, as well as the expert voices of thought leaders within the industry. Our program content is guided by the abstracts submitted, with an official agenda to follow. Abstract submissions closed on Friday, January 19, and are currently in review with the Conference Planning Committee.

Featured Speaker: Dr. Patricia Benner, RN, FAAN

Dr. Benner is a Professor Emerita in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, and former Senior Scholar at The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. She is a noted nursing educator and author of From Novice to Expert: Excellence and Power in Nursing Practice, which has been translated into twelve languages. She has directed over 50 doctoral dissertations and pioneered the use of Interpretive Phenomenology in Nursing.

She is the director of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching National Nursing Education Study, Educating Nurses: A Call for Radical Transformation, which is the first such study in forty years. Additionally, Dr. Benner collaborated with the Carnegie Preparation for the Professions studies of clergy, engineering, law, and medicine.

Dr. Benner is designated as a Living Legend of the American Academy of Nursing.  Elected an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Nursing and Danish Society for Nurses, her work has influence beyond nursing in the areas of clinical practice and clinical ethics. She has received four honorary doctorates and is the first author of Expertise in Nursing Practice: Caring, Ethics and Clinical Judgment (2010) with Christine Tanner and Catherine Chesla. In addition, Dr. Benner has co-authored twelve other notable books, including a 2nd Edition of Clinical Wisdom and Interventions in Acute and Critical Care: A Thinking-In-Action Approach.

She is Co-Founder of NovicetoExpert.org an online simulation program to teach clinical reasoning and judgment, as well as the Chief Executive Officer of EducatingNurses.com.

Featured Speaker: Dr. Dan Weberg, PhD, MHI, RN, FAAN

Dr. Dan Weberg is an expert in nursing, healthcare innovation and human-centered patient design with extensive clinical experience in emergency departments, acute in-patient hospital settings and academia. He currently serves as the Executive Director of Nursing Workforce and Innovation at Kaiser Permanente.

Previously he was Head of Clinical Innovation for Trusted Health, the staffing platform for the healthcare industry, where he helps drive product strategy and works to change the conversation around innovation in the healthcare workforce. He also worked as the Vice President for Transformation Services at Ascension, supporting 60,000 nurses and 140+ facilities in modernizing nursing technology, developing new care models, and measuring innovation outcomes.

Prior to joining Ascension, Dan spent seven years at Kaiser Permanente, where he held executive roles in nursing innovation, research, and technology strategy across eight regions, 38 hospitals, 60,000 nurses. He was also part of the founding faculty for the new Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine.

Dan is on the faculty at The Ohio State University College of Nursing and multiple innovation fellowship programs. He previously taught on nursing innovation and leadership at Arizona State University. He is on the editorial board for Nursing Administration Quarterly and has authored two dozen peer-reviewed articles and two textbooks, including Evidence Based Innovation Leadership for Health Professions and Leadership in Nursing Practice.

Dan earned his Bachelors in Nursing, and was in the first cohort to graduate from the Masters in Healthcare Innovation program at ASU, as well as the first-ever graduate of the PhD in Healthcare Innovation Leadership program at ASU. Dan serves on several advisory boards, including the American Nurses Association Innovation Advisory Board. His clinical background is in Emergency and Trauma nursing at level 1 trauma centers in California and Arizona.
